SAFETY

Find your safety within
Art by Jaquamarine

Safety is found within and always available to us.  As the external world changes exponentially, finding safety and an inner resource has never felt more important.

The last few years have been overwhelming for everyone, which is why it’s important to become more self-reliant and develop some useful coping skills that will help ground and support us whenever uncertainty or stress strikes.

It is essential to find safety within

Close your eyes and bring attention to your body. Scan and notice any sensations.  Ask questions like where in my body do I feel safe? Locate points of safety or neutrality, then anchor into that place and come back to wherever feels safe or neutral.

What or who makes you feel safe?  Close your eyes and imagine the person, pet, memory or place where you felt safe and use it as your support or safety resource whenever you are feeling overwhelmed.

Holding your arms or body tightly can provide comfort whenever intensity or pain pops up. If you are feminine, the left arm represents your inner child and can bring instant soothing from stroking or touching this part. For masculines, it is the right arm.

Being held brings safety, you can do this for yourself anytime you are feeling scattered or stressed.  Place one hand on your heart and one on your body to feel safe. Breathe in and find comfort. Learn what feels safe and create a resource for yourself whenever you need it.

Breathwork is another great resource that soothes the body and centres us. Practice breathing with one hand on the back of the neck or cranium and one on the belly. Take a deep breath in through the nose to the count of four, holding at the top, count to two, then exhale through the mouth to the count of four, holding for two before going through the cycle again.  Practice breathwork, note what gets you to a calm state and use it to regulate yourself.

When we go within we find peace there. Just spending five minutes a day in stillness and connected to your heart, will help you develop safety within. Whenever you feel scattered or stressed, you can return to this place to find relief.
