COGNITIVE DISSONANCE

Cognitive Dissonance is a two mind paradox

Cognitive Dissonance:

Cognitive Dissonance is a mind paradox, of being in two minds, confused and glitching from conflicting views that create discomfort.

If your thoughts are misaligned with your actions, or you find yourself going against your own beliefs, thinking one way and then acting another, cognitive dissonance could be running.

Cognitive Dissonance is a form of mental stress that creates ambivalence or disconnect when we have to make decisions or choices that may clash. Some people form unconscious beliefs to mask discomfort to stay in their comfort zone.  It's a familiar pattern for many right now, a form of mental protection or fog that is shielding us from the big changes happening on the planet.

Cognitive dissonance is the mental looping that kicks in from information overload that conflicts with our beliefs, values, or attitudes. It can also occur when a person's behaviour contradicts another’s beliefs.

Cognitive dissonance is a very modern issue of having choices that conflict

Humans have become unstable and unsure as a response to the state of the world we live in; cognitive dissonance is a mere symptom of the craziness, along with mental health issues and numerous health issues.  Cognitive Dissonance can feel like a threat to our identity because there is a sense of hypocrisy or conflict in our mind, a whirring of internal cogs and wheels to trying to align to resolve the contradiction in our beliefs.

Q: How can you tell if you have cognitive dissonance?

A: There is a mind paradox at play!

You may want to be healthy but don't exercise, or you are a smoker who knows it's bad for you but continues to smoke. You may believe in climate change but travel the world in your private jet, or you're someone who values honesty but lies to avoid hurting others.

We can feel shame from contrary behaviour, but there are a few things we can do to manage it:

  • Identify the source of what is causing you to be in two minds, and then you can start to address it.

  • Look at your biases and beliefs, and intentionally collapse them if they no longer resonate.

  • Be aware of any inconsistencies in your thought patterns, or practice self-awareness and watch where you may glitch in the two mind state.
